About MCMS

Magdalen college has a dynamic music society that holds events ranging from jazz evenings to open mike nights and a recital series.
Their ensembles run during Michaelmas and Hilary terms, in preparation for end-of-term concerts in Magdalen Chapel.
Any enquiries or programme suggestions can be sent to the President, whose contact details can be found on the MCMS website.

MCMS Ensembles

Magdalen Singers – ‘Mingers’, are a non-auditioning mixed choir. Recent repertoire has included Parry, Christmas carol arrangements, and gospel music.

Magdalen Orchestra is a non-auditioning chamber orchestra (including wind, horns and trumpets). Recent repertoire has included J. S. Bach’s Double Violin Concerto and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll.

Magdalen Saxophone Ensemble is small ensemble that plays at a variety of college functions. Recent repertoire has included jazz arrangements, including ‘Georgia on My Mind’ and ‘Misty’.

Singers and instrumentalists from all colleges are encouraged to join, and questions can be left on the MCMS Facebook page, or directed to the President, whose email address can be found on the MCMS website.

Magdalen College Recital Series

Magdalen’s long-established and prestigious recital series runs on Thursdays during term-time throughout the year. Recitals start at 1.15pm and typically last between 30 and 45 minutes. They take place in either the Magdalen Chapel or the Grove Auditorium, both within college walls, depending on availability and the preference of the performer(s). Both venues have Steinway grand pianos.

MCMS aims to attract the best performers from Oxford and beyond for the recital series – recent performers have included the prodigious young cellist Aram Yagubyan, double-prizewinner in the International Bach Competition in Leipzig, 2012. It is central to MCMS’s ethos that these recitals remain completely free of charge, in order to remain accessible to all music-lovers in Oxford.

If you would like to take part the Magdalen recital series, please contact the President, whose email address can be found on the MCMS website.
Please note we often run out of spaces some weeks before the start of each term.
