Univ is proud of its Chapel Choir, and offers free individual singing lessons from a professional teacher to all its members. New members (both from Univ and elsewhere) are welcome to join each October and throughout the academic year. Members of the choir enjoy an active social life, and there are opportunities to sing outside Oxford too. Their 2012 tour took them to Venice, and they have sung recently at Southwark and Birmingham Cathedrals.
Choral and Organ Scholars at Univ find themselves at the heart of a thriving musical community. They play a leading role in the chapel choir, and are often also involved with music elsewhere in College. This includes regular concerts organized by the University College Music Society, which recently celebrated its 80th anniversary with a concert in the Sheldonian Theatre. Choir members also have the opportunity to sing with the Univ Chorus, a large choir that has concerts in the Sheldonian Theatre, the University Church and in a number of college chapels.
One evensong per week plus two short weekly rehearsals. Occasional special services.
Who can join the choir?
The choir is open to members of any college subject to an informal audition.
Dinner is provided free of charge after Sunday evensong.
Scholarships are awarded to both 6th form entrants and current students at £150 each.
