Words from the Executive Committee

Jess Eastwood

President: Jess Eastwood

Being OUMS President is a truly great experience, it teaches you so many important skills and looks great on your CV, especially alongside an Oxford degree. It teaches you to manage your time well and communicate clearly and regularly with the people you work with, and is really worth the work for the satisfaction of helping people to find places to enjoy and appreciate music.

The President’s job is to keep the society running well, including the OUMS ensembles, and to find new ways to improve what we can offer to musicians at Oxford. This includes looking for new funding opportunities, maintaining a good relationship with the faculty and promoting our website and resources as the central point for music in the city, as well as making sure that we keep up to date with all the latest information. There is a lot of discussion with the rest of the executive committee and decisions are generally made collectively and tasks divided up, so that the committee support each other.

This role requires someone to be organised and efficient, but is not as daunting as it can sound most of the time! If you are an active member of the Oxford music scene and keen to enthuse people about music in Oxford then this is definitely the role for you – the President is the face of the society and usually a main point of contact for information. Because the role involves overseeing most of what goes on it can sound like more work than it is, but the rest of the committee are very helpful and supportive in their roles. I would really encourage anyone to apply to be President, it involves some time commitment but you can gain so much from it and I’ve really enjoyed my year working on the committee. Best of luck and feel free to contact me at with any questions!

Ella Thorpe-Beeston

Vice-President: Ella Thorpe-Beeston

I have really enjoyed my role as Vice President this year – it is a very flexible and diverse role that allows you to take on your personal projects for OUMS. The main responsibility is to look for corporate sponsorship for OUMS. This year, we found new ways to find funding such as the Citi Society Challenge and the RBS ESSA awards. The role also involves helping out with the Freshers Fair and Auditions, as well as helping out the various ensembles and societies, both outside Oxford and the UK, that get in touch with OUMS to ask for advice for upcoming tours. For example, I particularly enjoyed working with a children’s orchestra from Kazakhstan who were touring the UK in Michaelmas. I have also worked on getting OUMS ensemble concerts reviewed by the Cherwell to increase publicity, and more recently set up relationships with Music Plus so that the work of OUMS ensembles can reach the wider community. I would really encourage people to apply for the role of Vice President and am happy to answer any questions.

Isabel Garcia-Garcia

Secretary: Isabel Garcia-Garcia

As OUMS secretary you will be in charge of spreading the word about the music scene in Oxford. In practice, this means preparing our weekly newsletter and making sure musical events around Oxford are available in the OUMS calendar. In summary: making music closer to other members of the university.

Contact Isabel to find out more about the role of Secretary.

Arnold Mathijssen

Treasurer: Arnold Mathijssen

OUMS is looking for new Executive Committee members! The OUMS treasurer is primarily responsible for keeping the accounts, naturally. But much more goes on behind the scenes. As Treasurer, you work with the Exec, the Ensemble Managers, and the Music Faculty. The Exec aims to bring the musical life together in all of Oxford, specifically between the university-wide ensembles and the more local college societies. Building the bridge between those groups has been our goal since 1872! Therefore, it is most essential to keep up the bonds with our sponsors, and to look for new forms of sponsorship continuously. This way, we hope to bring everyone together so that you can enjoy playing and listening to music at its best!

Contact Arnold to find out more about the role of Treasurer.

Non-executive role: OUMS webmaster

Webmaster: Lucy Cui

Working closely with the executive committee, the webmaster’s role is enjoyable and rewarding. The OUMS webmaster is responsible for the upkeep of the main oums.org site, and is also at hand to help the Ensemble Managers update their ‘ensemble.oums.org’ domains if needed. The webmaster is also in charge of administering the OUMS domain. If you are familiar with WordPress and are looking to manage a site that receives tens of thousands of page views and thousands of unique visitors every term, you should apply for the OUMS webmaster role.

The current Exec

Words from the Executive Committee

Chloe Bradshaw

President: Chloe Bradshaw

Taking the role of OUMS President has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done whilst at university. The role primarily involves helping the Ensemble Managers to run the OUMS ensembles successfully, liaising with the Music Faculty, and organising the OUMS auditions. You can find out about the ensembles we look after on the Ensembles page of oums.org. With so many people to look out for, the role of President might seem quite daunting. However, so long as you’re organised and efficient, the role is really fun.

As President, you have to always be thinking about new ways to promote and grow the society. This year, the Exec and I focussed on this by completely redesigning the OUMS web presence, updating the society’s image, and by seeking new ways to bring money into the society. We reached out to new people by gathering information about college choirs and music societies, and we even welcomed OUJO to the OUMS family. I can’t wait to see what direction the next Exec decides to take!

If you love the Oxford music scene, have a vision for the future of the society, and want a chance to use your organisational skills, don’t hesitate to apply for the OUMS Presidency!

Contact Chloe to find out more about the role of President.

Jasmine Ramsay Gray

Vice-President: Jasmine Ramsay Gray

I would really encourage people to apply for the role of Vice-President of OUMS – I’ve really enjoyed working with the committee this year. The Vice-President’s main role is to look for sponsorship for OUMS, which can be difficult as the current financial climate means that companies have cut back on their sponsorship budget. However, it’s an interesting job, and you can learn a lot about how funding in the arts works! The Vice-President also has more freedom than the other roles to engage in personal projects to widen OUMS’ role – this year I’ve worked to establish a chamber music wing at OUMS (and you can see our work at oucms.oums.org), as well as trying to improve how OUMS engages with new freshers at the start of Michaelmas term, through writing the Freshers’ Guide to Music which some of you may have seen at Fresher Fair this year. I’ve also worked on several information drives – trying to gather information on different musical groups that operate in Oxford so that students looking to join an ensemble can simply visit the OUMS website for a list of all current groups, and not just OUMS ensembles. I’ve really enjoyed working with the rest of the committee in redesigning the new website and I hope that the next committee will take our work forward!

Contact Jazzy to find out more about the role of Vice President.

Nick Graham

Secretary: Nick Graham

Being Secretary might not sound like the most interesting job on the Exec Committee, and I know I envisaged taking minutes and doing lots of legwork! Whilst this is a small part of the job, far more important is being creative and thinking of new ways to attract students to the society. This is most clearly seen in the weekly newsletter which the secretary writes and designs to be as engaging as possible, and in the website which the secretary has some involvement in. Being part of the Executive Committee has been brilliant for the last year. It gives you a chance to really make a difference and improve one of Oxford’s oldest societies, and it puts you at the centre of the Oxford music scene. It’s certainly worth applying if you like music and want to be involved in promoting it and advertising it. It’s great to have on your CV (particularly if you might be interested in arts management, for example) and is just a rewarding thing to do. It’s a completely student run society, so you can really make a difference with your ideas.

Contact Nick to find out more about the role of Secretary.

Arnold Mathijssen

Treasurer: Arnold Mathijssen

The OUMS Treasurer is primarily responsible for keeping the accounts, naturally. But much more goes on behind the scenes. The Executive Committee aims to bring the musical life together in all of Oxford, specifically between the university-wide ensembles and the more local college societies. Building the bridge between those groups has been our goal, not least through our new website! A whole array of information is at your disposal, ranging from the various databases to the chapel choirs. This way, we hope to bring everyone together so that you can enjoy playing and listening to music at its best. I absolutely encourage people to apply for the role of Treasurer.

As Treasurer, you work with the Exec, the Ensemble Managers, and the Music Faculty.

Contact Arnold to find out more about the role of Treasurer.

OUMS Tree

Webmaster: Jesse Liu

The OUMS webmaster is responsible for the upkeep of the main oums.org site, and is also at hand to help the Ensemble Managers update their ‘ensemble.oums.org’ domains if needed. The new OUMS site is a great feature for the society, so it’s important that the webmaster is familiar with WordPress (our CMS) in order to keep it maintained well. The webmaster might help out with things like editing blog posts, emailing ensembles featured on the website to ensure that we have up-to-date contact information, and creating new pages at important times such as the OUMS audition sign-ups period.

The President also has the ability to change the oums.org website, so simple editing of text is shared between the President and Webmaster.

If you are familiar with WordPress and are looking to manage a site that receives tens of thousands of page views and thousands of unique visitors every term, you should apply for the OUMS webmaster role.

Contact Jesse to find out more about the role of Webmaster.

All of us on the OUMS committee are extremely excited to welcome OUJO to the society, ready for the busy Michaelmas term ahead. OUJO is the university’s premiere big band, and are well known from their performances at balls, dinners, and concerts throughout Oxford and beyond. They have twice won the BBC big band award, and they enjoy performing a wide range repertoire with great headliners year upon year. You can have a look at their website to find out more!

What does this mean for OUMS members?
OUMS exists to further the performance and appreciation of music within the University. The affiliation of OUJO means that we can now extend a new musical opportunity to many of our members. Wind, percussion and brass players participating in the Michaelmas OUMS auditions are encouraged to consider also auditioning for OUJO. You can find information about the OUJO auditions on by visiting their website.

All OUMS members can also be sure to hear about OUJO concerts in good time through the OUMS newsletter – OUJO perform at least three sell-out performances a year, and we will be sure to give you ample notice to get your tickets!

A warm welcome to all OUJO players and audiences!
