Venues

Here you can find information about venues available to hire for your musical event or rehearsal in Oxford. Don’t forget that College Chapels are also great venues, and will often let you use their facilities to hold a concert or rehearsal. Many colleges also have rooms available for use by their members that can serve as rehearsal spaces and concert venues. College rooms are often free to use by members of the college.

Corpus Christi Auditorium

Location: Corpus Christi College

Capacity: 135

Special facilities: excellent acoustics; AV system.

Additional information: usually has to be booked through a Corpus student.

Denis Arnold Hall

Location: Music Faculty, St. Aldates

Special facilities: AV system; Steinway grand piano; full percussion; recording facilities.

Holywell Music Room

Location: Holywell Street

Capacity: 196

Special Facilities: Steinway grand piano, harpsichord, most suited for chamber ensembles, oldest custom-built concert hall in Europe, hire cost includes a steward.

Additional information: can only be hired in term time, and only musical events are allowed: no plays or dancing.

Prices: £348 Monday-Saturday, £288 on Sunday (for whole day). Additional costs for hiring the piano (£160) or harpsichord (£75) and a small fee must be paid to the Performing Rights Society. Full details on the website; music students get a booking discount.

Magdalen College Auditorium

Location: Within Magdalen College

Capacity: 160

Special Facilities: Steinway grand piano, microphones, stage lights, AV equipment, disabled access toilet, level access into the Auditorium, tiered seating.

Student prices: £294 for 3 hours, which includes the services of a technician. Additional hours are £93.60 each.

Music Faculty Lecture Rooms

Location: Music Faculty, St. Aldates

Special Facilities: all rooms include a piano and are suitable for small rehearsals. They are used for music lectures in weekdays but are often available at the weekends and evenings.

Newman Room

Location: Near Pembroke College

Capacity: 400

Special Facilities: spacious and superb acoustics; can add dividing doors and staging.

Sheldonian Theatre

Location: Central Oxford (Broad Street)

Capacity: 750 (audience only)

Special Facilities: Basic PA; upright piano; choir risers; 50 music stands.

Prices: Evening performance (including afternoon dress rehearsal) £1100.
Lunchtime hire £550.

Shulman Auditorium

Location: Within Queen’s College

Capacity: 120

Special facilities: AV system; WiFi; excellent acoustics; reception area for refreshments; beautiful design (has won architectural awards).

Prices: £75 half day/£150 full day

Additional information: Usually has to be booked through a Queen’s student.

University Church

Location: Near the Bodleian Library

Capacity: 400

Special Facilities: Organ, Bluthner Model 2 Concert Grand, Space for Green Room (additional charges apply.)

Prices: A discount applies for University of Oxford orchestras, choirs and music societies. All concert and event bookings are subject to the approval of the Vicar, and must be Sacred/classical music. Please contact the administrator for more information.

Wesley Memorial Hall

Location: Near St. Peter’s College.

Capacity: 350, excluding performers.

Special Facilities: Ancillary room which can be used for interval refreshments; good acoustics; spacious performance area; grand piano and organ; different lighting effects possible; ‘Three Phase’ electricity if needed.

Student prices: £40/hr for evening rehearsal; £150 for lunchtime concert; £365 for evening concert (includes dress rehearsal in afternoon). Additional fee for using organ. Discounts if you have more than one concert in the academic year.
